The online automatic monitoring instrument for heavy metal atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) employs the principle of atomic fluorescence spectrometry. A solution of the analyte is mixed with sodium (potassium) borohydride. Under acidic conditions, arsenic, selenium, antimony, and other elements generate hydride gases (such as hydrogen selenide), which escape from the solution. These gases mix with argon and hydrogen and enter the atomizer (where they are ignited). The gaseous components decompose at high temperature, transforming into ground-state atomic vapor. Excited by the resonance line generated by the hollow cathode lamp of the analyte, the ground-state atoms transition to a higher energy state, then return to a lower energy state. The excess energy is released as light (atomic fluorescence). Since the intensity of atomic fluorescence is directly proportional to the concentration of the analyte, the content of the analyte in the sample can be determined.
